Weight Loss with Yoga



Practicing yoga ensures mental, physical and spiritual development, helping you to lead a ‘full’ life sans major problems. You find many people finding ways and means to lose excessive weight. Weight loss can be easily achieved when you practice yoga on a regular basis. It is definitely advisable to consult a qualified and experienced yoga teacher before you choose any of the yoga poses or asanas. Yoga focuses on the development of mindfulness with the different spiritual and mental aspects. This tends to increase the awareness of an individual. Different Poses of Yoga for Weight Loss:

  1. Dog pose facing downward:

This pose is also known as the ‘Adho Mukha Svanasana. This works perfect for hands, back, shoulder calves, hamstrings, feet and also arches. This also strengthens the legs, arms and the back. This asana needs to be done only once during a single session.

*Stand on the four limbs, forming a structure like a table.

*Your body needs to be like a ‘V’ inverted. Lifting the hips gently, the elbows and knees need to be straight when exhaling.

*The shoulders and hands need to be in a straight line, and the feet need to be in line with the hips with the toes pointing in the outward direction.

*Lengthen the neck while pressing your hands on the yoga mat and the gaze should be towards the navel area. This needs to be carried out for a few seconds. If you are suffering from high blood pressure, carpel tunnel syndrome, dislocated shoulder, weak eye capillaries, diarrhea or even pregnancy, it is advisable to consult a qualified professional.

  1. Lion Pose:

The Simhasana also known as the ‘lion pose’ needs to be done early in the morning. It is possible to perform this even in the evening but only if there is a gap of around 6 hours between meals.

*Kneel on the yoga mat after sitting and cross the ankles so that the front of your left ankle crosses over the right ankle at the back. The feet point to both the sides.

*Keep the palms on the knees, spreading the fingers and the palm. There should be some pressure applied to both the knees. You can either look between the eye brows or at the tip of the nose.

Some other yoga poses for the required loss of weight are Ardha Bhekasana (half frogs pose) and the eagle poses (Garudasana).

More often than not, yoga is considered an aerobic exercise but specific types of yoga tend to be more physical as compared to others. Active and intense yoga can help you burn the excess calories. These can also help in preventing any weight gain. With yoga you also benefit with improved metabolism and toning of the muscles.

Restorative yoga is another type of yoga which can help in weight loss. Intense yoga done three to five times a week is ideal for the required loss of weight.
